Honda Prelude returns to Europe after 25 years

The iconic coupé, redefined as a hybrid sports car
Honda is reviving one of the most emblematic names in its sports history. After a break of approximately 25 years since the withdrawal of the last generation, the Honda Prelude coupé is preparing to return to European markets, including Romania, in its first fully electrified version.
Initially announced as a concept at the Japan Motor Show and later confirmed for series production, the new Prelude marks not only the return of an icon, but also Honda's commitment to combining driving pleasure with sustainability.
A classic silhouette with a hybrid heart
The new Prelude retains the essence of a sports coupé, adopting a low and wide silhouette, with elegant lines and balanced proportions. Although the design evokes the spirit of Japanese coupés from the '80s and '90s, the interpretation is a modern one, adapted to the era of electrification.
The biggest novelty is the propulsion system. Unlike its predecessors, which were known for their high-revving, naturally aspirated engines, the new Prelude will be a full-hybrid (e:HEV) model. This sixth generation will use a powertrain that emphasizes efficiency without sacrificing performance.
Full technical details have not yet been revealed, but it is estimated that the hybrid system will deliver a combined power of approximately 203 hp (horsepower) and 315 Nm of torque, transmitted to the front wheels. The model will also benefit from Honda’s new S+ Shift automatic transmission, which has been designed to simulate the gear changes specific to a manual or sporty automatic gearbox, thus amplifying the dynamic feel behind the wheel.
The dimensions of the new coupé emphasize its sporty character, measuring 4.53 meters long, 1.88 meters wide and just 1.36 meters high.
More of a GT than a Type R
Honda is positioning the new Prelude as a Grand Tourer (GT) with a sporty touch, offering a balance between performance and refinement, ideal for everyday roads. Brand representatives have emphasized that the new model is not a Type R in disguise, but a car that combines the tradition of coupés with cutting-edge hybrid technology.
Surprisingly, despite the coupé body, the Prelude interior will be practical, with a four-seat configuration and a spacious trunk, which could even exceed the volume offered by a Civic hatchback.
European market launch and estimated price
The return to the European market is scheduled for early 2026, with the first deliveries expected in the first half of the year.
Although official prices for Romania and Europe have not been announced, experts estimate that the new Honda Prelude will have a starting price that will exceed the current threshold of the Civic e:HEV model (estimated at around €45,250), reflecting its superior positioning in the range as a specialized sports coupé.
With the return of the Prelude, Honda not only pays homage to its glorious past, but reaffirms its commitment to innovation, offering car enthusiasts a vision of the future of sporty and sustainable mobility.
