BMW is preparing the new generation M3 Touring: Codename G88, mild-hybrid technology and a possible landing in the US
The Bavarians at BMW are not giving up on the recipe for the performance estate. Although the current generation M3 Touring (G81) is still making history and attracting the attention of car enthusiasts, information from the Munich company indicates that the project for a successor has already been given the green light under the internal code G88.
What do we know about the upcoming BMW M3 Touring (G88)?
The new generation M3 Touring will continue the tradition of combining the utility of a family estate with track dynamics. The model's launch is expected in late 2028 or early 2029, about a year after the debut of the M3 Sedan (which will carry the internal code G84).
Key points of the future model:
- No Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) system: BMW has confirmed that the future M3 will not adopt a plug-in hybrid architecture, thus avoiding adding substantial mass (as was the case with the new M5).
- 48V mild-hybrid engine: Under the hood will be an upgraded version of the famous 3.0-liter inline-six engine (S58), assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system integrated into the transmission. Estimated power could exceed the 550–560 hp threshold.
- M xDrive all-wheel drive: The all-wheel drive system will be offered as standard, coupled exclusively to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
- Premiere for the US market: While the current G81 was not homologated for North America due to high costs, the recent success of its bigger brother, the M5 Touring, convinced BMW management to prepare the future G88 for the American market as well.
- Coexistence with the electric version: The future M3 with a combustion engine (G84/G88) will be sold in parallel with the 100% electric version of the M3, developed on the new Neue Klasse architecture.
How much does the current BMW M3 Touring cost in Romania?
The current generation (G81) is the first in the nearly 40-year history of the M3 to benefit from a station wagon body. In Romania, the model is sold exclusively in the top version BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive.

By adding optional performance packages — such as the M Race Track package (approximately 15,500 euros, which includes ceramic brakes, carbon bucket seats and an increase in top speed to 280 km/h) —, the final price of a current M3 Touring frequently exceeds 115,000 - 120,000 euros.
Price estimate for the new generation (G88)
The transition to the new technological architecture, the addition of the mild-hybrid system to 48V, the new assistance and infotainment systems derived from the Neue Klasse range, along with the inflation rate in the premium car industry, will influence the starting price.
- Estimated starting price (Romania): €110,000 – €115,000 (VAT included) for the basic version.
- With top-of-the-line options: A well-configured example could reach the range of €125,000 – €135,000.
