Volvo launches new XC40, EX40 and EC40 versions - fresh look and smarter interior
Swedish carmaker Volvo has officially unveiled a series of aesthetic and technological updates for three of its most popular models: the compact XC40 SUV and its fully electric siblings, the EX40 and EC40. Without changing the underlying technical architecture, the Swedes have made visible changes to the exterior, integrated state-of-the-art digital technologies into the cabin and expanded the safety system package.
Refined exterior design and sculpted details
Visually, the front of all three models receives an identity aligned with the brand's latest design language. The LED Matrix headlamps have been redesigned, retaining the iconic "Thor's hammer" light signature, but adopting a slimmer and more precise graphic. The front grille, front bumper, bonnet and side wings have also been reshaped to provide a more dynamic presence.
At the rear, the differences remain subtle but visible:
- Volvo XC40 and EX40: Benefit from LED taillights with new interior graphics, a redesigned rear bumper and a reformatted tailgate.
- Volvo XC40: It also receives a new range of alloy wheels in sizes 18, 19 and 20 inches, with an aerodynamically optimized design.
Digitalized cockpit: Larger screen and Google Gemini artificial intelligence
The main attraction inside is the new infotainment system with a floating 11.2-inch central touchscreen (up from the previous 9-inch screen), an element taken from the upgrades applied to the higher-end models.
Major innovations in the cabin include:
- Standard Google Gemini integration: The Android Automotive OS-based multimedia system now integrates the Google Gemini intelligent voice assistant, allowing for much more natural voice commands and advanced contextual searches.
- Improved wireless charging tray: Provides increased power and better heat dissipation for smartphones.
- New finishes and materials: The upholstery selection includes the new Arianne Cardamom leather option, and the natural wood decorative inserts have been refreshed to accentuate the minimalist Nordic atmosphere.
Technology and safety: New sensors and 3D cameras
Known for its rigorous safety standards, Volvo is bringing additional hardware and software equipment to all three models:
- New sensors and cameras: A new high-resolution front camera and 12 new ultrasonic sensors continuously monitor the car's surroundings.
- Safe Exit Alert: A system warns passengers audibly and visually if a cyclist or other vehicle approaches from behind when opening the doors.
- Updated Pilot Assist: The optional driving assistance package now includes an assisted lane change function.
- 360° camera system: Now offers a three-dimensional (3D) perspective rendered on the central screen, facilitating complex maneuvers in tight spaces.
Powertrains: WLTP continuity and efficiency
Regarding the mechanical underpinnings, Volvo has not made any changes to the propulsion versions:
- Electric system (EX40 and EC40): Retains Single Motor and Twin Motor configurations. Maximum WLTP combined cycle homologated range reaches up to 575 km for the EX40 and up to 584 km for the EC40 crossover coupe (in extended battery versions).
- Mild-Hybrid (XC40): Remains available with B-series petrol engines (B3, B4) assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Availability and price estimates for the Romanian market
The order system for the facelifted XC40, EX40 and EC40 models is already open at authorized dealers, and official production of the new variants will begin in the second half of this autumn. First deliveries to customers are expected at the end of the year or early next year.

On the Romanian market, the pricing structure for updated models is estimated as follows:

The higher trim levels (Plus, Ultra) and the Twin Motor all-wheel drive variants for the electric models can exceed the EUR 60,000 – 63,000 threshold. Technological updates to the display and safety systems keep these three models extremely competitive in the compact premium segment.
