Volkswagen reveals additional details about the ID. Polo

Volkswagen ID.Polo: The Electric Redefining of the Popular Compact. 450 km Range and a Game-Changing Starting Price

Volkswagen is preparing to make a big splash in the affordable electric car market with the launch of the next-generation ID.Polo. Officially scheduled for a debut in 2026, the electric model that inherits the spirit of the popular Polo promises to bring innovation, decent autonomy and, most importantly, a competitive starting price, below the 25,000 euro threshold.

Technical Details: Power and Autonomy

The new ID.Polo, built on the improved MEB+ architecture, will be positioned as a front-wheel drive vehicle, available with three engine options at launch:

  •     Base version: 116 HP or 135 HP, both with a 37 kWh net LFP (Lithium-Iron Phosphate) battery.
  •     Top version: 211 HP, equipped with a 52 kWh net NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery. This variant targets a range of up to 450 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.

The battery technology, with a unified cell structure and cell-to-pack technology, promises a 10% increased energy density, directly contributing to extended autonomy and lower overall mass.

Specification Small Battery (LFP) Large Battery (NMC)
Power Output 116 HP / 135 HP 211 HP
Net Capacity 37 kWh 52 kWh
WLTP Range - Up to 450 km
DC Fast Charging Up to 90 kW Up to 130 kW

Shortly after launch, in the second half of 2026, sports fans will have reason to rejoice: the ID.Polo GTI performance version will complete the range with a 226 hp engine and the same 52 kWh battery.

Dimensions and Interior Space: More Than a Polo

The ID.Polo grows in size, becoming more spacious and practical. With a length of 4053 mm and a wheelbase of 2600 mm, rear passengers will benefit from 19 mm more legroom.

One of the most notable improvements is the boot, which has a volume of 435 litres – 24% more than the current Polo with a combustion engine. By folding the rear seats, the load space reaches an impressive 1243 litres.

The adoption of the new Pure Positive design language and advanced technology, including the improved Travel Assist system (which recognizes traffic lights and stop signs), also underlines the complete modernization of the model. Production of the new ID.Polo will take place at the Seat plant in Martorell, Spain.

The Impact of ID.Polo on the Romanian Market: A Price Estimation

The launch of the Volkswagen ID.Polo has the potential to be a "game changer" on the Romanian automotive market, especially in the compact electric car segment. The model's success will crucially depend on the final purchase price, taking into account government incentives offered through programs such as Rabla Plus.

Price Estimation in Romania

The announced starting price at the European level, of 25,000 euros (VAT included), is an excellent basis. Applying a similar logic to other VW ID. models existing on the local market, we can estimate the following prices for consumers in Romania:

ID.Polo Version Estimated Standard Price (EUR, incl. VAT) Estimated Price with Rabla Plus Subsidy* (EUR, incl. VAT)
Base Version (116 HP / 37 kWh) €24,900 - €26,500 €15,500 - €17,100
Mid Version (135 HP / 37 kWh) €27,000 - €29,000 €17,600 - €19,600
Top Version (211 HP / 52 kWh) €31,500 - €34,000 €22,100 - €24,600
GTI Version (226 HP / 52 kWh) €36,000 - €38,500 €26,600 - €29,100

Estimate based on the current maximum value of the Rabla Plus eco-ticket, which is around €10,000 (for scrapping two old vehicles and meeting the CO2 emissions criterion). Prices are purely indicative and may vary depending on the exchange rate, equipment level and local pricing policies.

A Crucial Model for Local Electrification

If Volkswagen manages to keep the base price around €15,000 - €17,000 through subsidies, the ID.Polo could become one of the most attractive electric vehicles on the Romanian market. It would directly rival the Dacia Spring, but offer a much superior performance package (more power, extended autonomy, faster charging capacity, much more generous trunk and cutting-edge assistance technologies), addressing those looking for an electric car suitable for both the city and occasional long roads.

The Volkswagen ID.Polo is not just a battery-powered Polo, but a redefined successor, ready to change the perception of electric mobility in Romania, making it more accessible, more spacious and more efficient.
