Upheaval in 2026: Dacia Sandero falls to 5th place after a year of dominance in Europe

The king is dead, long live the French cousin! Renault Clio dethrones Dacia Sandero in the European sales rankings (February 2026)

After a year 2025 dominated authoritatively by Dacia Sandero, the European automotive landscape undergoes an unexpected mutation in the first months of 2026. The Mioveni model not only lost its crown, but also went into a free fall that completely removed it from the podium area.

The European car market is known for its volatility, but the figures for February 2026 managed to raise many eyebrows among analysts. Renault Clio, the "classic" of the B segment, took advantage of the vulnerabilities of the competition and comfortably settled in the first position, while the former champion, Dacia Sandero, seems to be struggling with its own production limitations.

Sandero: From the ecstasy of 1st place to the agony of 5th place

If 2025 was the year of glory for the model assembled in Morocco, February 2026 brought a "cold shower". Dacia Sandero recorded a drastic decrease of 33% compared to the same period last year, delivering only 14,000 units.

This underperformance is not necessarily a lack of interest from customers, but rather a boomerang effect of internal changes. Dacia recently made major changes to its engine range, a transition that generated logistical bottlenecks and syncopes in the production chain. The result? Sandero finished February in a modest 5th place, missing from the podium it used to dominate.

Podium of surprises: Hybrids and German pragmatism

While Dacia is finding its rhythm, the competition has regained ground. Here's what the "Elite" configuration looks like in the second month of the year:

Rank Model Key Insights
1st Renault Clio Market leader with 15,800 units (despite an 11.8% decline)
2nd Toyota Yaris Cross Strong performance, confirming demand for compact hybrids
3rd Volkswagen T-Roc Currently the best-selling SUV in the European market
4th Volkswagen Golf The German icon is surging back toward the podium
5th Dacia Sandero Dropped from 1st place due to a 33% year-on-year slump

"Duster", in free fall; Puma, slightly rising

The news isn't great for the Mioveni brand in the rest of its portfolio either. Dacia Duster, once a pillar of stability, plunged to 18th place, with a 31% drop.

On the other hand, the segment produced in Romania also has a small reason for pride: the Ford Puma. Although it is in 20th place, the model produced in Craiova recorded an increase of 8.7%, being one of the few models in the Top 20 that managed to defy the downward market trend this month.

What's next for 2026?

The cumulative ranking after the first two months confirms the new leader: Renault Clio is currently the favorite car of Europeans in 2026. However, the battle is far from won. If Dacia manages to solve its logistics problems and accelerate deliveries of the new engines, we could witness a spectacular comeback in the second quarter.

Until then, French pragmatism and Japanese hybrid efficiency seem to be the winning recipe in a Europe increasingly attentive to value for money, but also to the immediate availability of stocks.

Although Sandero lost the start, history has taught us that Dacia has incredible resilience. It remains to be seen whether 5th place is just a technical "halt" or the beginning of a decline.
