The new Renault Twingo E-Tech EV 2027 brings 90s charm to the electric age

Serious rival for Dacia Spring: Twingo E-Tech arrives with an affordable price and optimal autonomy for the city.

After a wait filled with concepts and launch announcements, Renault has finally lifted the veil on the long-awaited new generation Twingo E-Tech EV 2027, the first fully electric version of the iconic city car. The new Twingo is not just a car, it is a statement: a tribute to the playful and ingenious spirit of the 1990s original, perfectly adapted to the demands of 21st century electric mobility.

With a design that borrows heavily from the first generation, the new model promises to be a "game changer" in the electric city car segment, proposing an irresistible formula: style, intelligent functionality and, above all, a starting price under 20,000 euros.

Design: Twingo Smile, Electrified

The new Twingo E-Tech marks a Return to Origins, bringing back to life the round shapes and "smiling eyes" that defined the model launched in 1992.

  •     Friendly Face: The semi-circular headlights and discreet air intakes on the hood (now smaller, a detail taken from the original) give the car a cheerful and unmistakable air. The bumper integrates an air intake that looks like a wide smile, reinforcing the jovial personality.
  •     Retro-Modern Details: The taillights take up the same semi-circular shape, complemented by shark tails for a touch of modernity and the three square optical blocks for turn signals, fog and reverse.
  •     Optimized Dimensions: Although classified in the A-segment, Twingo E-Tech benefits from a length of 3789 mm and a generous wheelbase of 2493 mm, ensuring a surprising interior space for a city car. An initial selection of 4 vibrant colors (Absolute Green, Absolute Red, Mango Yellow and Starry Black) underlines the non-conformist character.

Expressive and Technological Interior

The cabin of the new Twingo retains the same recipe for colorful and expressive design, but brings it into the century of digital speed:

  •     Advanced Connectivity: The car is equipped with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch central screen for the OpenR multimedia system. It receives unique graphics and sound effects created in collaboration with legendary artist Jean-Michel Jarre.
  •     Reno Virtual Assistant: A new feature is the integration of the Reno virtual assistant, based on artificial intelligence, which allows the driver to interact with the car's functions vocally.
  •     Inherited Ingenuity: One of the most appreciated details of the first generation returns: the individually adjustable rear seats, which can slide up to 17 cm. This feature, together with the adjustable backrests, allows for either excellent knee room (160 mm) or a remarkable luggage volume for the segment, of up to 360 liters.
  •     Chic details: Interior trim, painted in body colour, and the lipstick-shaped gearshift knob (customisable with letters from the "Twingo alphabet" in Techno trim) add a special charm.

Autonomy and Urban Performance

The new Twingo E-Tech is built on the AmpR Small architecture of the Ampere division, designed specifically for small electric vehicles.

Its electric motor develops 82 hp (60 kW) and 175 Nm of torque, and is optimised for urban driving. Twingo accelerates from 0 to 50 km/h in just 3.85 seconds, while the classic 0-100 km/h sprint takes 12.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 130 km/h, sufficient for short extra-urban journeys.

The engine is powered by a LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery with a usable capacity of 27.5 kWh, which provides a range of 263 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. As for charging, at a fast DC station, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, if the optional Advanced Charge package is chosen.

Bidirectional Technology and Safety

Twingo E-Tech impresses not only with its range, but also with its charging technologies:

  •     V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid): With the optional Advanced Charge package (11 kW AC charger), the car integrates bidirectional functions. These allow, via V2L, direct powering of household appliances and, via V2G, recharging of the home's electrical grid or participation in grid balancing.
  •     Assistance Systems: With no less than 24 advanced assistance systems (ADAS) included in the Parking & Safety package, the new Twingo offers a high level of safety. These include adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistance and blind spot warning.
  •     One Pedal Driving: The One Pedal feature allows drivers to accelerate and decelerate using a single pedal, simplifying the city driving experience.

The New Renault Twingo E-Tech and the Launch in Romania

Although Renault has not yet communicated an exact date for the opening of pre-orders or the actual launch on the Romanian market, the information at the European level is extremely promising. Production of the new Twingo E-Tech will begin in 2026 at the plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

Expectations on the local market:

  •     Subsidized Price: The main attraction is the price. Renault promises a starting price of under 20,000 euros (before subsidies). In Romania, benefiting from programs such as Rabla Plus, the final price for the customer could become extremely competitive, placing the Twingo directly in the fight for the most affordable European EV.
  •     Commercial Launch: Considering the start of production in 2026, we can expect the first units to arrive in showrooms in Romania at the beginning or during 2026.
  •     Local Impact: The Twingo E-Tech will be a serious rival for the mini-EV segment, offering a more sophisticated yet affordable alternative with a charming design and cutting-edge technologies (such as V2G), which could convince a significant part of the urban public.

The new Renault Twingo E-Tech manages to be, at the same time, a vibrant homage to the past and a car that looks resolutely to the future. With an aggressively announced price and a suite of ingenious features, it could be the answer to the need for affordable and personality-filled electric mobility.
