The Grand Tourer's Rebirth: The New Mercedes-AMG SL Facelift Bets on Comfort and Returns to the 6-cylinder Engine
In a strategic move aimed at redefining the identity of the iconic SL, Mercedes-AMG is preparing a major update for its luxury convertible. The change of direction is clear: the new SL facelift abandons extreme rigidity in favor of superior refinement, while also marking the end of the controversial four-cylinder engine.
Since the launch of the current generation, developed entirely by the AMG division in Affalterbach, the Mercedes-Benz SL has been criticized by some purists for being perhaps too rebellious. Although the track performance was undeniable, many traditional customers felt the lack of that relaxation specific to a true "Grand Tourer". Listening to the voice of the market, the German manufacturer is now preparing to correct this trajectory.
Goodbye, 4-cylinders! Return to inline-six architecture
The most significant technical change concerns the entry-level model. The current SL 43, equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (borrowed from the A 45 AMG), will be withdrawn from the range. The decision comes as a direct response to customer demands that such a small engine did not live up to the prestige of the SL name.
In its place, Mercedes-AMG will introduce a new inline six-cylinder unit. This engine promises not only a nobler sound and a more linear power delivery, but also an increase in performance, being assisted by a mild-hybrid system with starter-generator (ISG). V8 fans have not been forgotten either: the 4.0-liter engines will undergo structural changes to the crankshaft, an engineering necessary to comply with the strict Euro 7 pollution standards, without sacrificing the brute force that made them famous.
Recalibrated suspension: Comfort becomes a priority
If the current model was conceived as a near-twin sibling to the AMG GT, the facelift will mark a clear separation between the two. According to information provided by the British publication Autocar, German engineers have been tasked with “sweetening” the suspension of the upcoming SL.
The decision was accelerated by the resounding success and positive reactions received by the Mercedes-Maybach SL version. Customers validated the idea that an SL must, above all, be a car capable of crossing continents without tiring its passengers. Thus, by recalibrating the shock absorbers and chassis control systems, the future model will offer a smoother ride, absorbing road irregularities much more effectively, leaving the role of "thoroughbred sports car" to the AMG GT.
Technological and visual upgrade
On the outside, the changes will be subtle but modern. The front end will receive a new visual identity, with redesigned headlights and a slightly revised Panamericana grille. Inside, the emphasis will be on digitalization and ergonomics. A new sports steering wheel, equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, and an updated central screen for the MBUX system will complete the atmosphere of technological luxury.
All engines will benefit from added power and the efficiency of mild-hybrid systems, ensuring that, although it will be more comfortable, the SL will not lose its ability to generate adrenaline when pressing the accelerator pedal.
Conclusion: A balance found
With this facelift, the Mercedes-AMG SL seems to be rediscovering its compass. Between the aggressiveness of a track car and the absolute luxury of a Maybach, the upcoming SL facelift promises to be exactly what fans have loved for seven decades: a gorgeous, fast and, above all, extremely comfortable convertible.
The launch of the new model is expected in the coming period, marking a new stage in the history of one of the longest-standing names in the global automotive industry.
