The new BMW X5 adopts the Neue Klasse design, comes with the largest battery in the brands history and a hydrogen version

Historic Change: The New BMW X5 Adopts the Neue Klasse Design and Becomes the First Model with 5 Powertrain Types, Including Hydrogen

The Bavarian manufacturer is preparing to open a new chapter in its more than quarter-century history in the premium SUV segment. In the final phase of calibration tests near the Spartanburg plant (USA), the 5th generation BMW X5 promises to be the most versatile and technologically advanced model in the brand's history.

For the first time, a production model from the German manufacturer will be offered with five different types of powertrain, also marking the debut of the first hydrogen-powered production version in BMW's history.

A completely new aesthetic: the "Neue Klasse" DNA

As confirmed by the first official images of camouflaged prototypes, the new BMW X5 is making a bold design transition. The SUV will officially adopt the aesthetic elements specific to the Neue Klasse language, taken from the new iX3 and i3. The minimalist front grille, seamlessly integrated with the optical blocks, and the athletic proportions completely redefine the model's stage presence.

Unlike the iX3, the new X5 does not use an all-electric platform, but relies on an updated version of the flexible CLAR architecture. This unique strategy allows the manufacturer to offer unprecedented diversity under the same body.

The propulsion revolution: The electric monster iX5 and the hydrogen premiere

The big news is the absolute diversity of propulsion systems. Customers will be able to choose exactly the technology that suits their needs:

  1. Gasoline and Diesel: Optimized thermal engines, equipped as standard with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.
  2. Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): A variant that combines urban efficiency with long-distance autonomy.
  3. Electric (BEV) – iX5: The fully electric variant that promises to become the new benchmark in the range.
  4. Hydrogen (FCEV) – iX5 Hydrogen (from 2028): The first series-production BMW powered by hydrogen fuel cells, scheduled for launch in 2028. It will use a revolutionary system of flat tanks (Flat Storage), mounted in a robust metal frame under the floor, without sacrificing interior space.

Technical details of the release versions

At the time of its market debut, fans of the brand will have three highly competitive power options available:
Mode

Model Version Powertrain Type Maximum Output Key Technical Details
BMW X5 40 xDrive Petrol / 48V Mild-Hybrid 400 hp All-wheel drive, optimized driving dynamics
BMW X5 50e xDrive Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) 490 hp Extended all-electric range
BMW iX5 60 xDrive Fully Electric (BEV) 578 hp 800V architecture, record-breaking battery capacity

The iX5 gets the largest battery in BMW history

The BMW iX5 60 xDrive electric flagship will introduce the sixth generation of eDrive technology. It will be equipped with a huge battery, with a net capacity of 141 kWh for the European Union market (and 144 kWh for the US market). With an 800-volt electrical architecture and new cylindrical cells, the iX5 promises record charging speeds (up to 400 kW) and a real range that will minimize the stress of long journeys.

"Heart of Joy" driving technology and advanced range

Under the body, the new X5 hides a central supercomputer called the Heart of Joy. It integrates dynamic functions, steering, braking and energy management, acting ten times faster than previous systems.

  • Roadholding: As standard, the car comes with adaptive suspension, and the rims can reach impressive sizes of 23 inches.
  • Top options: PHEV and electric versions can be equipped with the Adaptive Chassis Control Professional system, which brings active all-wheel steering (also for the rear axle) and an active roll stabilization system.
  • Driving assistance: The new model will boast Level 2 autonomous driving systems, grouped under the BMW Symbiotic Drive umbrella. These include advanced highway and city assistants, along with intelligent predictive guidance functions Entry-2-Exit and Address-2-Address.

Inside, the cabin will be completely dominated by the digital BMW Panoramic iDrive concept, the spectacular screen that stretches across the entire width of the windshield base, specific to the new Neue Klasse era.

Availability and price estimates in Romania

The new generation BMW X5 will be officially presented this summer, with the first orders for the Romanian market most likely to be opened towards the end of autumn, with the first deliveries scheduled for the first part of next year.

Given the massive technological leap, the introduction of 800V technology and the giant 141 kWh battery, it is expected that prices will undergo a slight upward adjustment compared to the current generation (at the end of its career).

  • BMW X5 40 xDrive (Mild-Hybrid): The estimated starting price for Romania will be around 92,000 - 95,000 euros (VAT included).
  • BMW X5 50e xDrive (PHEV): The plug-in hybrid version is estimated to start at approximately 106,000 – 110,000 euros.
  • BMW iX5 60 xDrive (Electric): The electric flagship, equipped with the massive battery pack and 578 HP, will certainly exceed the psychological threshold, with an estimated starting price of 125,000 - 132,000 euros, clearly ranking above its direct rivals from Audi or Mercedes-Benz due to the superior battery specifications.
