Tesla Semi prepares its European debut, find out everything you need to know about the launch, autonomy and specifications

Tesla Semi conquers Europe: Official debut and specifications of the electric truck will be revealed in Hanover

The European heavy commercial vehicle market is preparing for a historic move. American manufacturer Tesla has officially confirmed that the Tesla Semi, its long-awaited electric truck, will be on display at this year's IAA Transportation show in Hanover, which will take place from September 15 to 20. The event will mark the moment when the manufacturer will reveal the official specifications for the European version and concrete details regarding the commercial launch schedule on the Old Continent.

What do we know about the European version of the Tesla Semi?

After years of testing and a long period in which the truck was available exclusively in the North American market, the transition to series production at the Nevada plant paved the way for global expansion.

Preliminary information already published on the company's official European channels outlines a vehicle adapted to the rigorous standards of the European Union:

  • Gross vehicle weight: Designed for a 40-ton assembly, the maximum standard accepted on European roads.
  • Propulsion system: Three independent electric motors mounted on the rear axles, capable of ensuring high efficiency and superior dynamic behavior in heavy transport mode.
  • Autonomy and battery: The version prepared for the European market uses a 548 kWh battery pack (similar to the Standard Range variant in the US), offering an autonomy of approximately 550 kilometers on a single charge, at an estimated consumption of around 1 kWh/km.
  • Ultra-fast charging: With the help of Megawatt Charging System (MCS) technology, the battery will be able to recover up to 60% of its autonomy in just 30 minutes, a critical aspect for optimizing fleet transit times.

Launch horizon and infrastructure stakes

The actual commercial launch on the European market is scheduled for 2027. Even though the interest from transport operators is huge, success on European roads will directly depend on the expansion of high-power charging infrastructure.

According to current European regulations (through the AFIR regulation), the TEN-T road network must benefit from public stations dedicated to heavy electric vehicles at a rate of at least 50% by the end of 2027. Tesla has already started recruiting business development and fleet managers for major Western European markets, a sign that logistical preparations are on track.

Price and availability estimates for Romania

For transport companies in Romania, the arrival of the Tesla Semi represents an important technological milestone, but the acquisition will come with specific financial and logistical challenges:

  • Purchase costs: In the United States, prices start at the equivalent of about 222,000 euros (approx. 260,000 dollars) for the Standard Range version and go up to about 257,000 euros (approx. 290,000 dollars) for the Long Range version. For the Romanian market and the rest of Europe, the final price will inevitably be higher due to import costs, customs duties, VAT and homologation expenses. Realistically, the purchase cost per tractor head could be around 260,000 - 300,000 euros, depending on the configuration and taxes.
  • Availability: The first units intended for Romanian customers could be delivered at the earliest in 2027, with priority likely given to large international fleets and courier or logistics companies with well-established routes on the main European corridors.

The IAA Transportation show in Hanover in September will finally clear the waters, providing the exact figures and the long-awaited answer by the road transport industry: is Europe really ready for the electric revolution in heavy-duty trucks?
