Massive Stellantis recall campaign - nearly a million vehicles need a software update
The Stellantis automotive group has announced a massive recall campaign targeting 955,000 vehicles globally. The measure comes after the identification of a software problem in the multimedia system, a failure that can prevent the correct functioning of the reversing cameras and the correct display of the image on the central screen.
Campaign size and targeted models
The majority of the vehicles affected, 848,000 units, are in the United States. The campaign includes a wide range of models sold primarily in the North American market:
Chrysler: Pacifica, Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid and Voyager
Dodge: Charger
Jeep: Cherokee, Compass, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer and Wrangler
Ram: 1500 and 2500
Another 107,000 vehicles are being recalled in Canada, Mexico and other international markets. So far, Stellantis representatives said there have been no reports of accidents or injuries associated with this software flaw.
Technical solution and safety context
Affected owners will not have to physically travel to an authorized service center for mechanical intervention. The solution will come in the form of an “over-the-air” (OTA) software update, which will be transmitted automatically and will be signaled by a notification on the car’s central screen.
Safety recommendation: Until the update is applied, if the reversing camera image is missing, the manufacturer recommends that drivers rely on classic methods: using the rearview and side mirrors.
This recall underscores the critical importance of backup cameras to road safety. Starting in 2018, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated the equipment on all new light vehicles, having previously estimated that reversing maneuvers caused approximately 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries in the U.S. each year.
Are drivers in Romania also affected?
Regarding the Romanian market, the direct impact is very low, but it is not completely excluded for certain units:
Most of the brands and models targeted by this campaign (especially Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and the luxury Grand Wagoneer model) are not officially marketed in the European Stellantis network.
However, global models in the range – such as the Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee or Wrangler – are also officially available in Romania. In addition, there are a number of models imported directly from North America (so-called parallel imports) on the Romanian market.
Owners in Romania who own a Jeep model imported from the US or compatible vehicles from the Stellantis group are advised to check the chassis number (VIN) on the brands' official channels to ensure that their car is not part of the affected batch.
Do you want to know how you can check online, based on the chassis number (VIN), if a vehicle imported from the USA is subject to service recall campaigns?
