Mercedes-Benz has begun production of the new 2026 electric GLC SUV with technology made in Romania

The heart of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric beats in Sebe?: Production has officially begun in the world "capital" of the SUV

Mercedes-Benz has pressed the “Start” button for the new zero-emission GLC at its plant in Bremen, Germany. While German engineers are celebrating the final assembly, a vital part of this model’s success is written in Romania: the power units are manufactured exclusively at the Star Assembly plant in Sebe?.

After a spectacular presentation last autumn, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric (officially known as the GLC with EQ Technology) is moving from the status of “show car star” to series production. The model has officially entered the assembly line in Hall 9 in Bremen, the manufacturer’s largest and most flexible production facility in Stuttgart.

Flexibility as a secret weapon: 11 models in the same line

The Bremen plant is not just a dot on the map, but a veritable industrial “brain” where over 10,500 people work. What makes the production of the new GLC Electric remarkable is its integration on a mixed assembly line. Basically, the Germans produce internal combustion, hybrid and electric models (such as the EQE sedan) in the same place.

The Bremen factory currently manages an impressive portfolio of 11 models, seven of which are produced exclusively here:

  • Electric Range: EQE, GLC with EQ Technology.
  • Classic/Hybrid Range: C-Class (sedan and estate), CLE (Coupe and Convertible), GLC (SUV and Coupe).
  • Performance and Luxury Range: AMG SL, AMG GT and the exclusive Mercedes-Maybach SL.

"Made in Romania": Electric DNA comes from Sebe?

If the design and final assembly bear the mark of Bremen, the "muscles" of the new GLC Electric are trained in Alba County. The electric drive unit (EDU - Electric Drive Unit) is produced at Star Assembly Sebe?. This collaboration underlines Romania's strategic importance in the global Mercedes-Benz production chain, moving from the manufacture of conventional transmissions to high-tech components for the EV era.

The batteries, on the other hand, are supplied by the Accumotive subsidiary in Kamenz, and the rest of the critical components come from the Hamburg plant, creating an ultra-efficient European industrial ecosystem.

800V technology and record autonomy

The new GLC Electric is not only a "clean" SUV, but also an efficiency champion. Based on a modern 800-volt architecture, it allows for impressive charging speeds: in just 10 minutes, the car can recover a range of up to 305 kilometers. In the top version, the GLC 400 4MATIC, the total WLTP range reaches an important psychological threshold of 715 kilometers.

Availability and price in Romania: How much does the future cost?

The good news for customers in the country is that the new model can already be ordered in the official Mercedes-Benz Romania dealer network.

  • Starting price: The entry-level variant, the GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ Technology, has a list price starting at around 67,800 Euros (including VAT).
  • Higher versions: For those who want the full package of features, including the revolutionary interior with MBUX Hyperscreen and the "Sky Control" panoramic roof, the price can exceed the 102,000 Euro threshold.

Deliveries for the local market are scheduled to pick up in the second half of this year, consolidating the GLC model's position as the best-selling SUV in the brand's portfolio, this time also in a completely "green" version.

This transition marks the end of the era in which the “EQ” sub-brand was a separate entity, with Mercedes-Benz now choosing to integrate electric propulsion directly under the established names of its iconic models.
