Mercedes-Benz confirms new G-Class Cabriolet with 4 doors and AMG G 63 version

The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet 2027. Official images, technical details and estimated price in Romania

The German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is preparing one of the most spectacular relaunches in the world of luxury off-road. After a break of almost a decade since the last production convertible variant went out of production, the G-Class is preparing its return in a spectacular Cabriolet version. The official market launch is scheduled for 2027, but the Germans have already published a new series of official images with prototypes in testing.

Redefined design: Full wheelbase and 4 doors

The first official images released by Mercedes-Benz show the car partially covered in camouflage, with the rear and lower bodywork in particular being the focus. Unlike previous generations – which were two-door, short-wheelbase models – the new G-Class Cabriolet brings a major change in proportions:

  • 4-door body: The new model retains the full wheelbase of the SUV variant, offering generous space and much easier access for rear passengers.
  • Retractable fabric roof: The convertible system uses a soft-top made of durable fabric, specially developed to withstand high speeds and extreme weather conditions.
  • Landaulet-style architecture: A fixed metal structure remains above the front seats, combined with a generous protective frame (roll-bar) behind the second row, over which the fabric roof folds.
  • Functional details: The spare wheel housing mounted on the rear door directly integrates the third brake light, maintaining the classic off-road vehicle look.

Established production in Austria: Production of the new convertible will be entrusted to historic partners at Magna Steyr. The car will roll off the assembly lines at the Graz plant, where the G-Class has been assembled since 1979.

Performance without compromise: The AMG G 63 Cabriolet version

Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed that the new convertible range will include a high-performance version developed by the Affalterbach division: the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Cabriolet.

According to the details visible on the test prototypes (specific dual side exhausts and large alloy wheels), the model will be equipped with the well-known performance powertrain:

  • Engine: 4.0-liter Twin-Turbo V8, assisted by 48V Mild-Hybrid technology.
  • Power and torque: 585 hp and a maximum torque of 850 Nm.
  • Transmission: 9-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive system with three locking differentials.

Price estimates and availability on the Romanian market

When will it arrive in Romania? The full official presentation, without camouflage, is expected towards the end of 2026. Series production at the Graz plant will start in early 2027, and the first units will also be available to order in Romania through the official Mercedes-Benz dealer network in spring or summer 2027. Given the exclusive nature of the convertible body, allocations for the Romanian market will most likely be limited.

How much will the new G Cabriolet cost? Currently, the standard Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV variant has a starting price of around 200,000 euros (including VAT). Taking into account the mechanical complexity of the fabric roof and the status of a collector's model, industry estimates point to a significantly higher price:

  • Mercedes-AMG G 63 Cabriolet version: Estimated starting price between €260,000 and €300,000 (including VAT).
  • The exclusive customization options in the Manufaktur range can quickly push the final price of a fully configured copy above the 350,000 euro threshold.
