Mercedes-AMG launches biggest offensive in history against BMW rivals

All-out offensive in Affalterbach: Mercedes-AMG launches 27 new models to dethrone BMW M

Mercedes-AMG is no longer accepting second place. After a year in which its historical rivals from BMW M clearly dominated the global sales rankings, the performance division from Affalterbach has pressed the accelerator pedal to the floor. Their plan? A counteroffensive unprecedented in the brand's history: 27 new models in the next 3 years.

The stakes are simple but huge: recovering the ground lost to the Bavarians and redrawing the future of automotive performance.

The numbers behind the German horsepower war

The year 2025 left a bitter taste in the Mercedes-AMG camp. While the BMW M division celebrated an absolute sales record, delivering 213,457 cars worldwide, Mercedes-AMG managed to sell 145,000 units.

This considerable difference activated the alert state in Affalterbach, generating an aggressive recovery strategy for the next 36 months.

27 news in 36 months: The biggest offensive in history

To quickly close the gap with BMW, Mercedes-AMG is preparing a massive assault on the market. The first three pieces on this chessboard have already been revealed to the public:

  • The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe
  • The facelift for the AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic+ performance SUV
  • The facelift for the imposing AMG GLS 63 S 4Matic+

Future plans include even more exclusive models. Among the stars scheduled to appear are a representative of the new ultra-luxury Mercedes-Mythos series, as well as a high-performance monster based on the CLE platform, powered – to the joy of purists – by a V8 engine.

The revolution under the hood: More models, but far fewer engines

While the number of new models will explode, under the hood things will be dramatically simplified. Michael Schiebe, head of Mercedes-AMG, announced a radical restructuring of powertrain engineering.

"The number of engine types will decrease from the 10 we currently have to just 4 variants," Schiebe stressed.

This drastic optimization calls into question the future of 4-cylinder engines in the performance range. The new structure of the AMG engine portfolio will be based exclusively on four pillars:

  1. Inline 6-cylinder internal combustion engine
  2. V8 internal combustion engine (for top models)
  3. Plug-in hybrid system (PHEV)
  4. 100% electric propulsion (EV)

Target for 2030: Threshold of 200,000 units

This massive restructuring is not just about the pride of surpassing its Munich rival, but also has very clear financial goals behind it. Mercedes-AMG has set itself the target of selling 200,000 cars per year globally by 2030.

By reducing technical complexity (from 10 engines to 4) and flooding the market with 27 new body styles and trim levels, the Germans hope to achieve the perfect recipe: lower production costs and a much wider customer base. The premium performance war is just starting to get really interesting.
