Mazda CX-5 becomes third model in brand history to surpass 5 million units

Mazda CX-5: 5 million units and a new chapter in Romania

The Mazda CX-5, the compact SUV that redefined the Japanese brand’s identity, recently reached the impressive milestone of 5 million units produced globally. This achievement places the model in a select club, becoming only the third car in Mazda’s history to surpass this milestone, following the legendary Mazda 323 and Mazda3.

The success is no coincidence. Launched in 2012, the CX-5 was the "pioneer" that introduced the Kodo (Soul of Motion) design language and Skyactiv technology, elements that transformed Mazda from a niche manufacturer into a serious competitor in the affordable premium segment.

Romanian market performance: A pillar of stability

In Romania, the Mazda CX-5 has enjoyed constant popularity, quickly becoming one of the favorite models of customers looking for a mix of Japanese reliability and dynamic sporty behavior.

  • Record sales: In 2023, Mazda recorded a historic year in Romania, with over 2,800 units sold, of which the CX-5 contributed significantly, being narrowly surpassed only by the CX-30 and Mazda3.
  • Second youth: Although it was on the market in a mature form, the CX-5 managed to deliver almost 600 new units annually in recent years on the local market, remaining at the top of preferences in the compact SUV segment.
  • Second-hand market: Due to the quality of the materials and the extremely durable, naturally aspirated engines, the model is also highly sought after on the used market (Autovit, Mobile.de), where it retains its resale value very well.

New generation (2025-2026): Prices and features in Romania

While celebrating the success of 5 million units, Mazda is looking to the future. The new generation Mazda CX-5 (third) was officially presented in the summer of 2025 and has already started appearing in showrooms in Romania at the beginning of this year (2026).

The new model brings increased dimensions (a length of approximately 4.69 meters) and a much more technologically advanced cabin, equipped with screens up to 15.6 inches.

Starting prices in Romania:

Trim Level Estimated Price (incl. VAT) Key Features
Prime Line from €32,690 LED Headlights, Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
Centre Line from €34,500 Alloy wheels, Dual-zone automatic climate control
Exclusive Line from €38,690 Bose Premium Sound System (12 speakers), 360° Camera system
Homura from €41,790 Gloss black exterior accents, Adaptive LED Headlights, Premium interior

Under the hood, Romanian customers can opt for the 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G engine, now in a 24V Mild-Hybrid version, which promises an average consumption of approximately 7.0 l/100 km.

The Kodo Legacy: Beyond the 5 Million Threshold

Reaching the 5 million unit milestone is not just a number in a sales report, but confirmation of a risky but winning strategy. In an era of uniformity, the Mazda CX-5 has chosen to remain the "rebel" of the segment, betting on large-displacement naturally aspirated engines and a design that puts emotion above passing trends.

For the Romanian market, the success of this model demonstrates that the local public has begun to prioritize build quality and resale value over offers based strictly on the lowest price. The CX-5 has managed to create a community of loyal customers, who see this SUV as more than a simple means of transportation: a refined and predictable road partner.

With the launch of the new generation in 2026, Mazda is not only honoring its past, but also preparing the ground for the next millions of units. With a competitive price range and a boost in technology, the CX-5 has all the assets to remain the "flagship" of Japanese sales in Romanian showrooms, proving that the original recipe — a blend of Japanese aesthetics and honest engineering — is, indeed, timeless.
