Leapmotor Sets a New Record: The Rise of a Chinese EV Giant and Debut in Romania
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Leapmotor has confirmed remarkable growth in the global auto market, setting a new monthly delivery record in November. With 70,327 vehicles delivered, the company recorded an impressive performance, surpassing even an established name like Volvo globally.
This milestone marks the seventh consecutive month of record performance for Leapmotor, highlighting the accelerating pace of growth in the EV segment.
Leapmotor's Record Figures (November)
- Total deliveries: 70,327 vehicles.
- Year-on-Year Growth: +75.08% compared to November last year (40,169 units).
- Monthly Growth: +0.05% compared to October (70,289 units).
- Total January-November: 536,132 vehicles delivered, a progress of +113.42% compared to the previous year.
This solid performance has prompted Leapmotor management to adjust its goals. The initial sales target for 2025 (500,000–600,000 units) has been increased to 580,000–650,000 units. Furthermore, the company aims to reach an annual sales volume of one million units in 2026.
Who is Leapmotor?
Leapmotor (Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese automaker specializing in electric vehicles, founded in December 2015 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. The company sold its first vehicles in 2019 and quickly distinguished itself with a high vertical integration strategy (producing a large part of its components in-house), which gives it remarkable price competitiveness.
A crucial moment in its evolution was the strategic partnership with global automotive giant Stellantis (owner of the Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot, Citroën brands, etc.). Stellantis acquired a 20% stake in Leapmotor and owns 51% of the joint venture Leapmotor International, which handles the marketing of Leapmotor vehicles outside of China.
This partnership is essential for European expansion, providing access to Stellantis’ extensive distributor and service network. In fact, although there was an attempt to produce the T03 model in Poland, Leapmotor decided to start production of its first European model in Spain, using Stellantis’ facilities.
Leapmotor and the Romanian Market
Leapmotor is one of the new Chinese car brands that made its debut on the Romanian market. The official launch on the local market took place through Autogreen Motors, a company in the AutoItalia group, which is also the official importer for other Stellantis brands (such as Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo). Romania is part of the initial nine European countries where Leapmotor International began its marketing.
Models Available in Romania:
Leapmotor T03:
- A compact, A-segment urban car (direct rival of the Dacia Spring).
- WLTP combined range: Up to 265 km.
- Starting price: From approximately 19,900 Euros (without Rabla Plus subsidy).
Leapmotor C10:
- A fully electric D-segment SUV.
- Promised range: 420 km (for the BEV version).
The AutoItalia Group announced an expanded sales network, using part of the existing network of the Stellantis brands it represents. The initial sales target for Romania was 300 units by the end of 2024 and over 1,000 units the following year.
In conclusion, Leapmotor is not just a simple startup, but a player that is quickly establishing itself globally. Through the strategic alliance with Stellantis and the offer of affordable and high-performance electric vehicles, the Chinese company has all the prerequisites to achieve its ambitious goals and gain a significant share on the Romanian market.
