Powered by vibration: Land Rover recalls over 250,000 SUVs for service due to airbag fault

DETROIT – In a move that puts premium segment safety standards under scrutiny, Land Rover has launched a massive recall campaign. It targets no fewer than 250,857 SUVs, due to a cause that may sound trivial but has potentially severe consequences: a defect that risks preventing the driver's airbag from deploying in the event of a crash.

Targeted models: From Defender to Range Rover

The recall campaign does not discriminate based on price or vehicle destination, affecting some of the most popular and robust models in the British manufacturer's portfolio. They are directly targeted:

  • Range Rover – models manufactured between 2022 and 2026
  • Discovery – models manufactured between 2021 and 2026
  • Defender – models manufactured between 2020 and 2026

Technical cause: How car movements can sabotage safety

According to the official report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States, the problem originates from fretting corrosion on the driver's side airbag connector.

Over time, this microscopic wear leads to an increase in electrical resistance within the circuit. At the critical moment of an accident, the electrical signal needed to deploy the airbag could be completely blocked.

What the engineers say: Following rigorous vibration testing completed in March 2026, Land Rover's technical team concluded that normal suspension movements and body torsions during everyday driving are the main factors contributing to this oxidation at the connector pins.

The investigation began in August 2025, after the quality department noticed a statistical anomaly: an unusual increase in warranty repair requests related to the illumination of the airbag warning light. By November 2025, the first parts recovered from the network already confirmed the presence of traces of oxidation.

Warning system: Drivers have time to react

Fortunately for owners, the car offers an early warning system. The manufacturer states that affected vehicles will display the airbag warning light on the dashboard at least 500-600 kilometers before the electrical resistance increases enough to block the system from functioning.

If the warning light comes on in the dashboard, a visit to the service becomes an absolute emergency, but it does not mean that the airbag is already inoperative in the first second.

The life-saving solution: No parts to change, just a "gel"

While the problem may seem complex, Land Rover's proposed fix is ??surprisingly simple and non-invasive. Instead of replacing expensive steering wheels, wiring harnesses, or modules, mechanics will apply a special protective gel to the airbag connector terminals. This treatment will insulate the electrical pins and prevent corrosion from recurring.

The campaign will be free for customers, and Land Rover stressed that, to date, there have been no accidents, fires, injuries or confirmed cases of airbag failure in the United States due to this.
