Ford E-Transit Custom gets more versatile: all-wheel drive and extended range for 2026

Ford E-Transit Custom: All-Wheel Drive and Increased Range - A Leap for Electric Commercial Vehicles

Ford Pro is bringing a number of significant improvements to its successful electric model, the E-Transit Custom, preparing it for the 2026 market. These updates directly target the demands of the commercial vehicle market, offering more range, superior power and, most notably, the option of all-wheel drive (AWD).

The new configuration solidifies the E-Transit Custom’s position not only as an efficient electric utility vehicle, but also as a robust solution for more challenging working conditions, such as slippery terrain, ice or mud.
Larger Battery, Extended Range

A fundamental change is the introduction of a 71 kWh battery, replacing the previous 64 kWh. This increase in capacity translates directly into greater range:

  •     WLTP range: Increases from 335 km to 373 km.

In addition to the larger battery, the DC fast charging speed has been improved to 125 kW. This allows for a 10-80% charge in just 29 minutes, 10 minutes faster than before. Importantly, Ford will also allow owners of existing E-Transit Custom models to improve their 10–80% charge time to 25 minutes via over-the-air updates.

Performance and All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

The most anticipated new feature is the introduction of All-Wheel Drive (AWD) option. The existing model uses a single electric motor on the rear axle (RWD). The new AWD variant adds a second motor on the front axle, offering:

  •     Two Power Options: 214 HP or 281 HP (for Sport and MS-RT versions).
  •     Improved Traction: The dual-motor system distributes torque to all four wheels, optimizing traction on ramps and difficult surfaces.
  •     Wide Availability: The AWD system is offered on a wide range of body styles (Van, Kombi, Double-cab, Multicab) and trim levels (Trend, Limited, Trail, Sport, MS-RT).
  •     Towing Capacity: Remains unchanged at an impressive 2,300 kg.

By adding AWD, Ford is addressing the needs of customers in industries such as construction, forestry and emergency services, who frequently operate in adverse road conditions.

Price Estimation for the Romanian Market

Although Ford has not yet announced official prices for the updated variant (71 kWh battery and AWD), we can make an estimate based on current list prices (for the model with the 64 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive) and market trends.

Current list prices for the Ford E-Transit Custom (64 kWh, RWD) in Romania start at approximately EUR 47,600 + VAT (recommended promotional price), according to official information.

Update Feature Estimated Price Impact (Excluding VAT)
71 kWh Battery (vs. 64 kWh) + 1,500 - 2,500 EUR
All-Wheel Drive (AWD) (Second Motor) + 3,500 - 5,500 EUR
Total Estimated Increase + 5,000 - 8,000 EUR

Estimated List Price (Excluding VAT) for E-Transit Custom (71 kWh, AWD):

Starting from the current base price, we estimate that the new E-Transit Custom model with all-wheel drive and 71 kWh battery could have a list price (excluding VAT) starting at:

  •     Between EUR 52,600 and EUR 55,600 (excluding VAT)

For top-of-the-line variants, such as those in the Sport or MS-RT trim with 281 HP, the price could exceed EUR 60,000 (excluding VAT).

Prices will be influenced by the exchange rate at the time of launch (early 2026) and any available government subsidies (e.g. Rabla Plus program).

Conclusion

The Ford E-Transit Custom’s updates transform it from a simple urban delivery vehicle into a full-fledged, versatile utility vehicle. The combination of extended range, optimized charging speed and the option of all-wheel drive positions it as a serious competitor in the electric commercial vehicle market, capable of handling a much wider range of loads and road conditions.
