Project “Heart of Joy”: The future electric BMW 3 Series unleashes on the ice in Sweden

BMW has entered a straight line with preparations for the most important model of the decade: the electric successor to the legendary 3 Series. Tested at temperatures of -30°C in Arjeplog, Sweden, the new BMW i3 promises to be not just another electric car, but the "brain" of a new era of driving.

While most manufacturers focus on screen size, engineers in Munich have spent the last few weeks on the frozen lakes of Sweden putting the finishing touches on what they call the “Heart of Joy.” It’s not a marketing name for an audio system, but a central supercomputer that promises to give purists the agility that made the 3 Series a global icon.

Countdown: March 18

The Bavarians have officially lifted the curtain on the calendar: the final design of the new BMW i3 will be revealed to the world on March 18, 2026. Although the prototypes captured in the images still wear dense camouflage, the proportions betray a sports sedan silhouette, much lower and more aerodynamic than its bigger brother, the iX3 SUV.

The "heart" that thinks 10 times faster

The big technological innovation is the integration of the Heart of Joy control unit. Unlike current systems, where propulsion, braking and steering are managed by separate computers that "communicate" with each other (sometimes with noticeable latencies), the new system centralizes everything.

  • Reaction speed: Processes data 10 times faster than the current generation.
  • BMW Dynamic Performance Control: Allows torque distribution so precise that the car can correct a skid before the driver can feel the loss of grip.
  • Soft-Stop function: Promises to eliminate that uncomfortable "jerk" at full stop, specific to electric cars with aggressive energy recovery.

Performance: The numbers that matter

The new i3 will be the first sedan built on the 800-volt architecture, which means the time spent at the outlet will be drastically reduced.

Goodbye, classic screens?

Inside, BMW is preparing a visual revolution with Panoramic Vision. Instead of dashboard-mounted tablets, information will be projected across the entire width of the windshield at the base, ensuring the driver’s eyes always remain on the road – a modern homage to the brand’s driver-oriented cockpit.

Production of the new BMW i3 is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026 at the Munich plant, which has undergone a radical transformation to exclusively house Neue Klasse models.

Are you curious to see what the final forms look like under the camouflage? Stay tuned for March 18th, when we'll see if BMW has managed to save "driving pleasure" in the electronic age.
