BYD Launches "City NOA Safety Guarantee": Full Financial Liability for God's Eye Intelligent System
In a major move that promises to completely reshape the way we view responsibility behind the wheel, Chinese carmaker BYD has officially announced that it will fully cover damages resulting from accidents caused by its semi-autonomous driving system. The move marks an industry first: it is the first time an automaker has taken full financial responsibility for an SAE Level 2 system (where the driver is theoretically required to remain attentive).
Paradigm shift: The builder, not the driver, opens the wallet
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have become a constant presence on most new vehicles. While technologies such as adaptive cruise control or lane keeping assist promise to reduce road risks, global legislation has remained firm: the driver is the one who must monitor the road and remains solely at fault in the event of a collision. BYD has just broken this pattern.
Through the new service called “City NOA Safety Guarantee,” the manufacturer takes on the financial risk. If the car is involved in an accident due to a fault in the semi-autonomous driving system while the function is being used properly, BYD directly covers all economic losses.
What exactly does this warranty cover?
- Vehicle Repairs: The full costs to restore your BYD car to its original condition.
- Damage to third parties: Material damage caused to other vehicles, properties or infrastructure elements.
- Bodily injuries: Medical expenses and financial compensation for victims involved in the accident.
Important note: This coverage is valid for one year and does not involve any additional costs for customers. Furthermore, the company specified that an incident will not negatively impact the homeowner's commercial insurance premiums for the following year and there is no maximum limit on compensation.
The technology behind it and the precedent already confirmed
The warranty applies to the Urban Navigate on Autopilot (Urban NOA) feature, a core component of the proprietary God's Eye intelligent platform (versions A and B). The service is offered free of charge for the first year to both new and existing customers, once their cars receive the software update to God's Eye version 5.0.
To prove that this is not just an aggressive marketing strategy, BYD has already solved the first real case. Just two days after the official announcement, a vehicle in Urban NOA mode was involved in a minor incident in China. The investigation by the technical department took less than 24 hours: the company confirmed the correct use of the system and paid for the repairs in full, including details such as the paint protection film (PPF).
The manufacturer's confidence is based on a massive fleet: over 3.15 million vehicles equipped with BYD smart systems are already on the road, collecting over 200 million kilometers of real-time data every day. A similar experiment conducted by BYD last summer for its Level 4 automated parking system demonstrated the effectiveness of the approach: the rate of use of the function by customers exploded from 21% to 93% when the fear of liability was eliminated.
When will this guarantee be offered in Romania?
Although BYD has officially entered the Romanian market, launching competitive electric and plug-in hybrid models (such as Sealion 7, Seal or Seal U) and developing a rapid dealer network in major cities, local customers will still have to wait before benefiting from such financial relief.
The implementation of this measure in Romania and, implicitly, in the European Union, faces three major barriers:
| Barrier | Description | Status / Requirements |
| Legal Framework and Third-Party Liability (RCA) | In the EU, legal liability for Level 2 systems rests exclusively with the driver. While updates to EU directives regarding AI product liability are ongoing, regulatory progress remains slow. | Requires alignment of local insurance regulations (e.g., ASF in Romania) and EU-wide motor insurance directives. |
| European Type Approval | The God’s Eye system must undergo rigorous testing by EU and UN-ECE regulatory bodies to be certified for European public roads. | A complex certification process involving cybersecurity standards and ADAS algorithm validation. |
| Localization and Mapping | The Urban NOA feature relies heavily on LiDAR sensors and high-definition (HD) maps. Romanian urban traffic features unpredictable patterns and substandard road markings. | BYD needs to develop a local data infrastructure and adapt its software to regional road conditions. |
The market verdict
Realistically, the God's Eye hardware and software package could become an option on BYD's European models in the next two years as the brand consolidates its presence on the continent. However, the manufacturer's direct financial liability in the form of "included insurance" will likely remain blocked at China's borders until the European Union establishes clear and standardized rules for high-autonomous vehicles.
Until then, BYD's initiative remains a strong signal sent to Western and American competitors, demonstrating that the real race for autonomous cars is not won only with lines of code, but also with taking risks.
