BMW reaches historic milestone of 2 million electric cars sold, an i5 M60 xDrive marks the moment

BMW surpasses 2 million electric cars and consolidates its position in Romania

The BMW Group has officially reached the milestone of 2 million fully electric vehicles (BEVs) sold globally. The achievement comes 13 years after the debut of the brand’s first series-production electric model, the pioneering BMW i3 launched in 2013. The pace of adoption has accelerated dramatically: while the first million electric cars took almost a decade, the second million were delivered in just 25 months.

The symbolic car number 2,000,000 is a BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan, finished in Tanzanite Blue. Assembled at the German plant in Dingolfing, the performance model based on the new 5 Series was delivered to a customer in Spain.

Figures of Bavarian electrical expansion

  • 3.5 million electrified vehicles: Including 100% electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, BMW has exceeded 3.5 million units sold since the launch of the BMW i division.
  • 1 in 4 cars electrified: In the first half of 2026, a quarter of the group's total global sales were represented by electrified models.
  • 38% growth in Europe: In the second quarter of 2026, sales of fully electric BMW models on the European continent increased by 38% compared to the same period last year, reaching 81,445 units.
  • 28% share of the European market: In the first six months of 2026, 100% electric cars accounted for 28% of the German group's total deliveries in Europe.

The success of BMW electric models in Romania

In the Romanian market, the BMW Group has maintained a steady upward trajectory, establishing itself among the leaders of the premium electric vehicle segment. The shift towards zero-emission options is supported by the expansion of corporate fleets and the preference of private customers for the Bavarian sedans and SUVs.

A decisive factor in the local success is the flexible architecture strategy: popular models such as the 4 Series (i4), 5 Series (i5) or X1 (iX1) are available simultaneously with thermal, hybrid and 100% electric engines, allowing a transition adapted to the needs of each driver.

The brand's transition from the pioneering i3 to the 2 million unit milestone paves the way for the Munich-based manufacturer's next technological revolution: the launch of the new generation of Neue Klasse models, developed on platforms dedicated exclusively to electric propulsion.
