BMW M3 makes the switch to electric propulsion: Debut confirmed for 2027

BMW Officially Confirms the Architecture of the Future Electric M3: Four Motors and 1000 HP

The electric revolution is reaching one of the most sacred names in the automotive universe: the BMW M3. The Munich-based performance division has officially confirmed that the next generation of the sports sedan, scheduled for launch in 2027, will abandon internal combustion engines for a revolutionary architecture with four electric motors.

Here's everything you need to know about this historic model, its impact on the Romanian market and the estimated costs.

Four motors and a digital brain: Neue Klasse Technology

The future electric M3 is not just a simple battery-powered model, but a total rethinking of driving dynamics. Built on the new Neue Klasse platform, it will introduce specifications that seem taken from video games:

  • 4-motor configuration: Each wheel will be driven by its own electric motor. This architecture eliminates the need for mechanical differentials, allowing for extremely precise torque control on each wheel (torque vectoring).
  • Heart of Joy: This is the name of the new electronic “super-brain” that will manage the chassis and propulsion. BMW promises that the software will be able to simulate gear changes and provide a specific M audio experience through the speakers.
  • Battery of over 100 kWh: On an 800V architecture, the car will support ultra-fast charging and will ensure generous autonomy, despite the colossal power (rumors indicate over 700 hp, with the possibility of reaching the 1,000 hp threshold on the top variants).
  • Modular traction: To save energy, the front axle will be able to be completely disengaged in highway mode, transforming the car into a rear-wheel drive.

BMW M’s Success in Romania: A Love Story for Horsepower

Romania has become a strategic market for the BMW M division. Although our country is still in the process of developing its electric infrastructure, Romanians’ appetite for performance models is at an all-time high.

  • Record year in 2024: BMW Romania reported the delivery of 684 M models (both Performance and High-Performance), a significant increase compared to previous years.
  • The M3, a status symbol: The M3 Sedan remains one of the favorites of Romanian customers, being appreciated for its versatility (4 doors) and track performance. Recently, the M3 Touring (station wagon) variant has also gained ground surprisingly quickly among local enthusiasts.
  • The transition to electric: The success of the BMW XM hybrid model in Romania (89 units sold in 2024 alone) demonstrates that the local public is ready to accept electrification, as long as it comes with visual aggression and raw power.

How much will the new electric M3 cost?

Although official prices will not be announced until close to 2027, we can refer to the current prices of the combustion model and the cost of the Neue Klasse technology to make an estimate.

Currently, in Romania, a BMW M3 Sedan starts at around €95,000 (including VAT). Given the costs of the batteries and the complex four-motor system, we expect an increase in the list price:

Feature Current BMW M3 (G80/G81) Future BMW M3 Electric (2027)
Powertrain 3.0L Twin-Turbo Inline-6 4 Electric Motors (One per wheel)
Platform CLAR (Gasoline/Hybrid) Neue Klasse (Dedicated EV)
Horsepower 473 hp - 523 hp (Competition) 700 hp – 1,000+ hp (Estimated)
0-100 km/h ~ 3.4 - 3.9 seconds < 3.0 seconds (Projected)
Drive System RWD or M xDrive (Mechanical) Digital xDrive (No mechanical differentials)
Battery Capacity N/A > 100 kWh (Net usable)
Charging Speed N/A 800V Architecture (Up to 400kW DC)
Transmission 6-Speed Manual / 8-Speed Auto Single-speed (Simulated gear shifts)
Weight ~ 1,730 kg - 1,855 kg ~ 2,200+ kg (Estimated due to batteries)
Est. Starting Price From ~€95,000 (Romania) From ~€120,000+ (Estimated)

These prices are estimates and may be influenced by government subsidies (Rabla Plus) valid at the time of launch, as well as fluctuations in the automotive market.

Although purists will regret the sound of the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, BMW is betting that the instant torque delivery and absolute digital control will redefine driving pleasure.

Conclusion: A new definition for “Driving pleasure”

The transition to a fully electric BMW M3 marks the boldest bet in the Bavarian division’s more than five-decade history. Although the disappearance of the inline six-cylinder engine represents a difficult moment for purists, the Munich-based manufacturer promises a fitting compensation: a dynamic precision impossible to achieve by mechanical means. With four engines that “think” individually and a power output that could exceed the psychological threshold of 1,000 hp, the future M3 does not just want to replace the old model, but to completely eclipse it on the track.

In Romania, the success of this model already seems assured by the constant appetite of local customers for everything that the “M” emblem means. Even if the price tag reflects the cutting-edge technology under the hood, the M3’s iconic status will remain unchanged. It remains to be seen whether the digital “soundtrack” and innovative materials will be able to create the same visceral connection as the one behind the wheel, but one thing is certain: from 2027, the letter M will stand for quieter, but much more brutal performance.
