BMW iX3, Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Palisade are finalists for the 2026 Car of the Year title

Who will conquer the world? The finalists for the "World Car of the Year 2026" have been announced: A battle between the electric future and the hybrid giants
NEW YORK – In an era of radical transformation in the automotive industry, the World Car Awards jury has raised the curtain: the BMW iX3, Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Palisade are the three models that will fight for the most coveted title of the year. From the Bavarians’ “Neue Klasse” to the rebirth of a Japanese electric icon, the stakes have never been higher.
The 2026 edition of the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) competition promises to be a watershed moment. For the first time, we see a direct confrontation between radically different technological visions: cutting-edge electric luxury, sustainable affordability, and the versatility of a large SUV that refuses to abandon (now hybridized) combustion engine propulsion.
The three "kings" of the final: Three philosophies, one trophy
- BMW iX3 (Neue Klasse): It is probably the most important model launched by BMW in the last decade. Based on the new “Neue Klasse” architecture, the iX3 promises a range of over 600 km and an 800V ultra-fast charging system. It is Germany’s bet on digital and electric supremacy.
- Nissan Leaf (3rd Generation): The one who "democratized" the electric car has completely transformed. Abandoning the docile hatchback design, the new Leaf has become a futuristic crossover, inspired by the Chill-Out concept, offering cutting-edge technology at a much more affordable price than its premium rivals.
- Hyundai Palisade: The South Korean giant brings a breath of fresh air to large families. Completely redesigned for 2026, the Palisade impresses with an interior that rivals the luxury segment and, crucially, a new 329 hp hybrid engine, proving that internal combustion engines still have a hard time saying anything.
Complete list of finalists by category
The jury, made up of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, sifted through hundreds of models to arrive at this shortlist. Here's how the duels in the other categories look:
| Category | Finalists |
| World Electric Vehicle | BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Nissan Leaf |
| World Luxury Car | Cadillac Vistiq, Lucid Gravity, Volvo ES90 |
| World Performance Car | BMW M2 CS, Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, Hyundai Ioniq 6 N |
| World Urban Car | Baojun Yep Plus/Spark EUV, Firefly, Hyundai Venue |
| World Car Design of the Year | Kia PV5, Mazda 6e/EZ-6, Volvo ES90 |
BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has already been named “World Car Person of the Year 2026” for his vision for the brand’s transformation, which gives the iX3 a slight moral advantage in the final.
From Lucid Luxury to the Chinese "Firefly"
Beyond the ultimate title, the secondary categories offer big surprises. In the luxury segment, the American startup Lucid tries to beat the European tradition (Volvo) and the American opulence (Cadillac) with the Gravity SUV. At the opposite end, the "Urban" category brings to the fore the Firefly brand (Nio's sub-brand for Europe) and the partnership between General Motors and the Chinese from Baojun.
Final verdict: April 1
The winners will be officially announced on April 1, 2026, at the opening of the New York Auto Show. Although the date might suggest a joke, the economic and image stakes for the manufacturers are as serious as can be. Who will go home with the trophy? It remains to be seen whether Hyundai's pragmatism, BMW's innovation or Nissan's accessibility will win the hearts of the judges.
