BMW celebrates 50 years since the start of production of the 3 Series

Seven generations and 50 years of the BMW 3 Series: the milestones of a legendary model

German car manufacturer BMW is celebrating a historic moment: 50 years since the start of production of the 3 Series. Launched in 1975, this model quickly became not only a reference for the Munich brand, but a benchmark in the premium compact sedan class, constantly redefining the balance between sportiness, elegance and utility.

With over 18 million units assembled over half a century, the 3 Series is not only the brand's best-selling model, but also an essential pillar in BMW's global strategy.

A Global Production, a Unique Spirit

The 3 Series' journey began at the heart of the brand, at the main plant in Munich, in 1975. Success quickly led to production expansion, including plants in Dingolfing (1980) and Regensburg (1986). As BMW expanded its global footprint, the 3 Series followed suit, being produced on 4 continents, in 18 plants in 13 countries.

From the assembly lines in Rosslyn (South Africa) and Spartanburg (USA) in the 1980s and 1990s, to today's production lines in Shenyang (China), San Luis Potosi (Mexico), Chennai (India), Rayong (Thailand) and Araquari (Brazil), the 3 Series has demonstrated remarkable adaptability while maintaining its promise of "fun to drive".

The Future of the 3 Series: Electrification and Innovation

The seventh generation, codenamed G20, continues to be a leader in the segment. But BMW is already looking to the future.

One of the most anticipated moments is the introduction of the first fully electric BMW 3 Series, based on the new Neue Klasse architecture. It will enter the assembly line at the Munich plant in mid-2026. Subsequently, electric production will expand to China and Mexico, marking a major transition and confirming the 3 Series as a key model in the electric age. The Germans are also preparing the return of the 3 Series to the Dingolfing plant, underlining the strategic importance of this model.

The Success of the 3 Series in Romania: More than a Car

In Romania, the BMW 3 Series has acquired a special significance, becoming a symbol of performance and status.

Although the exact data regarding the total number of units sold since the brand's debut on the local market is kept confidential, the success of the 3 Series in Romania is undeniable, being visible in:

  •     New Car Market: The 3 Series consistently ranks among the most sought-after premium models in its segment, attracting customers who value BMW's superior driving dynamics.
  •     Second-hand market: Here, the 3 Series (especially the E46, E90 and F30 generations) has seen phenomenal success. Thanks to its reputation for reliability (largely, but not exclusively), timeless design and increasing affordability, these older generations often dominate the sales charts, being among the most sought-after premium second-hand cars. This demonstrates not only the success of the new model, but also its longevity and long-term appeal among the Romanian public.
  •     Brand Image: The 3 Series has contributed massively to consolidating BMW's image in Romania as a manufacturer of premium, driver-focused sports cars. For many Romanians, owning a 3 Series, regardless of generation, represents an aspiration and proof of appreciation for German quality.

As we move into a new era, with the electric 3 Series, the model's popularity in Romania is expected to grow even more, integrating classic BMW performance with cutting-edge sustainable technology.
