Audi confirms definitive end of production for legendary 5-cylinder engine in 2027

Farewell, Legend: Audi Confirms the End of the 5-Cylinder Engine. How Euro 7 Standards Kill the “Heart” of the RS Division

It's official: Audi's inline-five mechanical symphony is nearing its final act. In a move that marks the end of a golden era for car enthusiasts, the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer has confirmed that the iconic 2.5 TFSI engine will be permanently discontinued.

The decision is not one based on a lack of popularity — on the contrary, demand for performance models remains high — but on the harsh reality of European regulations.

Euro 7: The insurmountable financial barrier

The main reason behind this forced "retirement" is the new Euro 7 pollution standards. Although much debated and subsequently nuanced, these standards impose emission limits and testing procedures so strict that updating an engine with a special architecture, such as the 5-cylinder one, would require colossal investments.

For Audi, the math is simple but painful: the redevelopment costs to make the engine compatible with the regulations at the end of this decade can no longer be economically justified, given the relatively small volume of units sold compared to mass-produced engines.

"There are currently no plans to relaunch the 5-cylinder engine," a brand spokesperson told German publication Automobilwoche, thus sealing the fate of this legendary unit.

Withdrawal timeline: How much time do we have left?

If you were planning to buy a ticket to this unique acoustic experience, the clock has already started. Audi has set a clear timetable for the phasing out of the RS3, the only model that still carries this legacy under its hood today:

  • End of 2026: The engine will be officially withdrawn from the European market.
  • Mid-2027: Production will also cease for the rest of the international markets (USA, Middle East, etc.).
  • July 2027: The last Audi RS3 unit will leave the assembly line, officially marking the closing of the chapter.

A history written through sound and victories

The 5-cylinder engine is not just a piece of engineering; it is the soundtrack to Audi's success in motorsport. Debuting in 1976 in the Audi 100, this configuration offered the perfect balance between the refinement of a 6-cylinder engine and the compact dimensions of a 4-cylinder.

The hallmarks of a legend:

  • 1980s: The engine became synonymous with the Group B Rally era, where the Audi Quattro rewrote the rules of the game.
  • Firing order (1-2-4-5-3): This is the “secret recipe” that delivers the guttural, unmistakable sound that has captivated generations of fans.
  • The 1997 precedent: This isn't the first time Audi has ditched the format. In 1997, with the end of the first-generation S6, the engine was shelved, only to make a spectacular comeback in 2009 on the TT RS. This time, however, the context of electrification suggests a return is unlikely.

What's next for the RS division?

The withdrawal of the five-cylinder engine leaves a huge gap in the German automaker's performance lineup. It is expected that future iterations of the compact RS models will transition to high-performance hybrid systems or go fully electric, following the brand's global strategy to become a purely electric brand by 2033.

Although the future promises impressive acceleration figures, the automotive community laments the loss of “character.” Without the distinctive rumble at high revs, the Audi RS3 will remain a fast car, but it will cease to be a visceral experience.

What else can you buy in Romania?

If you want to grab the last chance to own this piece of history, the current offer of new models in the Audi Romania network is strictly limited to the top of the performance division:

  • Audi RS 3 (Sedan and Sportback): The benchmark model for this engine, offering 400 hp and the famous quattro system. Prices start at around 63,000 EUR.
  • Audi RS Q3 / Sportback: The compact performance SUV that retains the same 2.5-liter unit. It is available with a starting price of around 71,000 EUR.

Important note: Models like the Audi TT RS are already out of production and can no longer be configured new, being available only on the used car market (e.g. Das WeltAuto). Given that 2026 is the last year of sales in Europe, the quotas allocated to Romania will become increasingly limited, and their resale value is expected to increase significantly.

The verdict? If you have a 5-cylinder Audi in your garage, keep it sacred. From 2027, the sound that conquered Sanremo and Monte Carlo will only be heard in recordings or at collector's events.
