Volkswagen delays the launch of the new Golf until the beginning of the next decade

Change of strategy at Wolfsburg: Why Volkswagen postponed the launch of the new electric Golf 9 until 2030

The German manufacturer is redoing the calculations for the most important model in its history. Pressure from Chinese competition and technological delays are forcing Volkswagen to extend the life of its internal combustion engines and postpone the Golf's electric revolution.

Initial plans pointed to 2028 as a turning point for Volkswagen, the year in which the legendary compact Golf was to completely abandon internal combustion and enter the 100% electric era with the 9th generation. However, the reality of the automotive market dictated a radical reconfiguration of the route.

Present at the "Future of the Car" summit organized by the Financial Times in London, Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, officially confirmed what many analysts anticipated: the future electric Golf will not reach showrooms before 2030. > "We have a fantastic range at the moment, so we do not need an electric Golf in 2028. We are very well positioned with the current vehicle portfolio," said Schäfer, signaling a temporary relaxation in the pace of the brand's massive electrification.

Long-term coexistence: Golf 8 remains in place until 2035

This delay of at least two years brings excellent news for fans of traditional propulsion. The current Golf 8, which has just undergone a substantial facelift, will continue to be produced and marketed in parallel with the development of the new model.

Furthermore, Volkswagen plans to keep combustion and hybrid engines in the current generation range until 2035 – the deadline imposed by the European Union for the sale of new emission-free cars. To streamline costs, production of the petrol and hybrid versions would be moved to Mexico, leaving the parent plant in Wolfsburg to prepare exclusively for the brand’s future digital and electric era.

The "Chinese Equation" and the problems behind the curtain

The Germans' strategic decision is not purely optional, but comes against the backdrop of two major pressure factors:

  • Delays in the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform): The new 800-volt architecture, intended to be the backbone of all electric cars in the group, has suffered delays due to complex software issues. As a result, the group has decided to prioritize premium brands. The platform will first debut on Audi and Porsche models, and only later (around 2030) will it reach the volume brand Volkswagen.
  • Fierce competition in China: The invasion of the electric vehicle market by Chinese manufacturers has triggered a real price war. Schäfer admitted that this competition has forced VW to “redo the math” to ensure the profitability of the new Golf. In the automotive industry, profit margin parity between electric and internal combustion cars cannot be achieved without massive scale production.

Until the Golf 9 is ready, Volkswagen will focus its efforts on launching more affordable or complementary electric models, such as the ID. Polo, ID. Cross or updated versions of the ID.3 range (such as the ID.3 Neo project).

What will the future Golf 9 look like? Inspiration from the past and electric performance

Although the launch has been delayed, the design and structural development process is at an advanced stage. According to VW officials, the styling of the new ID. Golf is 96-97% complete.

  • Retro-modern design: The new electric Golf will not be just a redesigned variant of the current ID models, but a genuine Golf. The visual proportions and overall lines will be strongly inspired by the Golf 4, considered by many fans to be one of the most balanced and timeless generations in the model's history.
  • Performance DNA: The brand's purists have not been forgotten. Although it will be fully electric, the upcoming Golf 9 will receive the legendary sports treatment. The GTI and Golf R performance versions are already confirmed in the development plan and will be launched shortly after the presentation of the standard model.

Conclusion: A step back for a safer leap

The postponement of the electric Golf 9 is clear evidence that the global transition to electric mobility is not a linear path, but one strewn with logistical and economic obstacles. With this tactical move, Volkswagen chooses pragmatism over haste, preferring to offer the market a mature, profitable product capable of carrying forward a name that has defined the European automotive industry for more than half a century.
